STRUCTURES

ALPLA LANSERIA PLANT

Client: Griffin Holdings
Completed: 2024

Alpla, an international leader in plastic packaging and recycling solutions, required the development of a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and warehouse in Johannesburg. Carlisle & Associates Consulting Engineers were appointed to undertake the structural engineering design for the project.

The initial phase, completed in 2022, comprised approximately 36,000 m² under roof. A subsequent expansion in 2024 added a further 10,000 m², resulting in a substantial and highly impressive industrial facility.

Key components: Structural steel roof, reinforced concrete columns and slabs, tilt-up panels, piled and pad footing foundations, solar panels on roof.

ALPLA BALLITO RECYCLING PLANT

Client: ALPLA
Completed: 2025

Alpla opened a PET recycling plant in Ballito in 2025. Carlisle & Associates were appointed to undertake the civil and structural engineering design for the project.

Approximately R1 billion was invested in the facility, which comprises 12,000 m² under roof space and extensive outdoor storage areas.  The project included unique Geotechnical challenges, which will be highlighted in the ‘Civils’ section below.

Key components: Structural steel roof, reinforced concrete columns and slabs, tilt-up panels, piled foundations, solar panels on roof.

CIVILS

ALPLA BALLITO RECYCLING PLANT

Client: Alpla
Completed: 2024

The subsurface soils in the location of this coastal site were such that a layer of weathered sandstone restricted the downward drainage of water within the alluvium layer above, creating a ‘water-bed’ effect. These conditions affected the bearing capacity, foundation stiffness and settlement performance which are critical factors in foundation design. Carlisle & Associates worked with Kaytech to improve the founding conditions and thereby ensure a robust and reliable design.

Key components: Excess pore pressure, water-bed, localised perched water tables
